On a day when a comet is about to strike the Earth two young women who do not know each other well, one blind and one paraplegic, decide to spend their last hours together. A disaster may be eminent but An Ordinary Day takes an unconventional approach and only uses it as a means to draw them together over the course of the day. This romance between two disabled women evolves cautiously and slowly, though there are plenty of indicators of their mutual attraction from early on. Gentle flirting and sensitive emotional resonance in the penultimate hours before end-of-the-world. The emptiness of the city around them is palpable. In this total two-hander both actresses are terrific, we buy their characters and all their flaws completely. The film works so well because it eschews the genre trappings and stereotypes of disaster/apocalyptic movies and concentrates on the relationship between these two women who are destined to be together.
