On returning to Seoul a man moves into a cheap rental floor of a big house, but soon he starts to have strange experiences so his friends come to help investigate. Friends getting together and having a terrifying experience is not a new story line, but this wonderfully evocative and dynamic horror film has some nice Korean twists and steadily becomes both more and less real as a strange dream logic begins to seep in. This is a very well made spooky thriller that beautifully combines mystery and tension along with the requisite ancient mystical symbols and myths. The film shifts styles and form in minor ways constantly, using dramatic irony to build suspense and excellent direction and performances to keep the escalating action compelling. When the line between dreams and reality becomes blurred maybe that decision to save money on rent wasn’t the best choice.
