A struggling accordionist busker gets more than she bargained for when her desire to get noticed attracts the attention of a mysterious and enticing competitor. Mira is a frighteningly beautiful animated tragedy that deceptively plays the floral musical notes of a cautionary tale, albeit a very dark one. There is a moody, almost oppressive, tone and quality that just gets heavier the further in you go. This incredible stop motion film depicts how a person’s love for their art can be turned into toil and torture when a fellow artist uses and abuses them for their own gain. The creative effort that this film must have taken is inspiring. Stop motion is unbelievably time consuming, and the devotion required to put together a work of this quality has given us a real gift, especially for animators who can relate and for horror lovers. Just the way the film is able to deliver such a visionary gut punch without sacrificing an ounce of drama is something.
