A Vietnamese-American family’s plan to cover up a drunk driving accident begins to unravel when their emotional baggage spills out in front of the police. Taking a universal theme of a family coming together in the face of an emergency this is a fantastic blend of tension and dry comedic moments, used to either ratchet up the suspense or act as relief. It becomes almost a little absurdist at times, and there’s the lurking potential of a Coen/Raimi-esque small-time crime gone wrong atmosphere. The film is really dependent on the acting and the timing and the whole cast are excellent, featuring Michael Ironside as an old cop. This is a wonderful black comedic family drama based on a true story about a night when bad decisions and circumstance collide in unpredictable ways.
