Two young brothers navigate the challenges of their parents’ failed marriage, their deep bond helps them support each other and their mother. A precocious child with a penchant for insightful self-reflection narrates this story about feeling the need to grow up fast to keep what is left of their family together. The film is a wonderful combination of a child’s perspective, black & white cinematography and an elliptical, stream of consciousness style with occasional bursts of Tree of Life-era Terrance Malick. Lyricism rooted in the reality of dysfunction. We can feel their pain and confusion but they are still kids and live largely in the present which is helping them get on with their lives. There is real vision to this beautiful, poetic film that takes a different approach to the coping with separation theme and captures a feeling of childhood reflection, a fleeting moment of time, without pressure of external plot machinations or overworked/forced thematic resonances.
