Join us for VIFF Kids Club – our monthly family matinee series with fun film-inspired activities and themed concession snacks before the show! Doors open at 11:00 am for activities, with the film screening at 12:00 pm.
This Month’s Film
Trying to prove himself, young clown fish Nemo swims too far from the Great Barrier Reef and the next thing he knows he’s captive in a fish tank in a Sydney dentist’s office. Protective dad Marlin (Albert Brooks) bravely follows in his wake. New friend Dory (Ellen DeGeneres), a big-hearted but forgetful blue tang fish, tags along for moral support and comic relief. Together they face sharks and a few scary sea creatures, make new friends on their journey, and persevere against the odds.
In this rescue story, so much of the magic of Finding Nemo is in its under water world-building: this shimmering movie brings to life the tropical ocean world and coral reef of the Pacific Ocean, and offers exciting adventure and an unforgettable cast of lovable characters.
This Month’s Activities
Before the film gets started, kids will have the opportunity to create their own underwater flipbooks, and we’ll be screening a beautiful animated short film from the National Film Board of Canada (NFB). A Sea Turtle Story by Kathy Shultz chronicles the life cycle of the critically endangered sea turtle. This 9 min short will be screened multiple times between 11:00 am and 12:00 pm.

A comedy flick, a road trip film, a prison break movie: “Finding Nemo” is a lot of things. But the film is Pixar’s best because it grounds it all in the vividly rendered relationship between fish father Marlin and his son Nemo, who he struggles to let grow and inadvertently pushes away. Marlin’s quest to find Nemo after he gets kidnapped is Pixar’s most satisfying emotional journey: a perfectly paced and plotted adventure that still cuts deep on the first or third or 5,000th watch.
Indiewire
Content Consideration: Rated G, but strongly recommended for ages 7 and up due to scary scenes with sharks, many-toothed alien-like sea creatures, and the death of Nemo’s mother (off camera, due to a barracuda attack) at the beginning of the film. Marlin thinks Nemo appears to be dead for a few minutes later in the film, but he turns out to be alright.
