Humane

This event has passed

A new Cronenberg makes her bow and symbolically kills her father in this dystopian black comedy. A revered national broadcaster, Charles (Peter Gallagher) gathers his (grown) children around him to announce he and their stepmother have enrolled in the government’s emergency euthanasia program — in fact the medics are coming to administer a fatal dose this very night. Alas, his noble gesture backfires when stepmom panics and flees, leaving the administrators short of a body. One of the children will have to step up and take her place… It’s not long before they’re quite literally at each other’s throats.

With a standout turn from Enrico Colantoni as the lethal bureaucrat who won’t take no for an answer, Humane is a deeply cynical — not to say, horrific — satire on a species facing the ultimate sacrifice.

A prize-winner at Sundance, Shuchi Talati’s sensitive debut feature is an unusual coming-of-age drama for its nuanced and sympathetic portrait of mother-daughter dynamics in a sexually repressive culture; it doesn’t go where you expect.
