Youngblood is a smart, action-packed hockey drama directed by Hubert Davis (Black Ice, VIFF 2022) that thoughtfully examines race, masculinity, and resilience in sports. Teenager Dean Youngblood, shaped by his father’s aggression, struggles to control his temper while earning a spot with the Hamilton Mustangs. Facing challenging teammates, racism, a harsh and skeptical coach, and a connection with fellow athlete Jessie, Dean must navigate personal and athletic obstacles. Blending emotional depth with gripping fast-paced hockey, the film shows how determination, teamwork, and self-awareness can help a young athlete overcome challenges and grow. Featuring compelling performances, this remake of the 1986 film pays tribute to the late director Charles Officer (Mighty Jerome), who passed before the film was completed.
