A warm and fuzzy family film about the harvesting of young children’s screams? Well, yes, it can be done and here’s the proof. Pete Docter reasoned that the old saw about a monster hiding in the closet (or under the bed) could be the perfect starting point for a comedy — so long as the monsters are more scared of the child than vice versa. And there you have it. The toddler (Boo) somehow crosses to Monstropolis, causing mayhem in a vividly imagined underworld where our heroes John P Sullivan (voiced by John Goodman) and Mike Wazowski (Billy Crystal) live and work. Sully is a big blue furball with purple patches and horns on his head; Mike’s a green eyeball on legs. Together they’re irresistible, the surrogate parents we would all dream of. It’s probably Pixar’s funniest film.

Mar 21: Intro by Jordan Gowanlock, instructor in animation and digital media, Emily Carr University

Staggeringly generous with its witty lines, its allusions, above all with its sheer visual spectacle.

Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian

It’s a terrific piece of work: smart, inventive and executed with state-of-the-art finesse.

David Ansen, Newsweek

The creativity on display in Monsters, Inc. is Pixar in full-flow.
