About City of God:
After the set, you’re invited to enjoy the powerhouse Brazilian cinematic classic, City of God (130 minutes), directed by Fernando Meirelles and Kátia Lund. A blistering portrait of the criminal underbelly in Rio de Janeiro’s favela Cidade de Deus, the film was nominated for five Academy Awards, incluidng Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay. Cast with non professional actors from the favelas, it has a rare authenticity, and has been favourably compared with Goodfellas and Boyz in the Hood.
City of God churns with furious energy as it plunges into the story of the slum gangs of Rio de Janeiro. Breathtaking and terrifying, urgently involved with its characters, it announces a new director of great gifts and passions: Fernando Meirelles.
Roger Ebert
One of the most startling, grittily brilliant films in recent years.
Desson Thompson, Washington Post
It’s a movie with all the dials cranked up to 11, an overwhelming, intoxicating assault on the senses, and a thriller so tense that you might have the red seat plush in front of you — or even some unfortunate’s hair — gripped in both fists.
