Eliza (Michaela Kurimsky) has a secret life. After church on Sunday she ducks out into the woods, strips off, pulls on a ski mask, and strikes a series of erotic poses for her anonymous Instagram project. Then there’s her friendship with Toni (Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers), the only “out” lesbian in town, and consequently an object of suspicion and hostility in this coastal Newfoundland community. By contrast, everyone likes Eliza. But nobody really knows her.
Melanie Oates’ movie casts a baleful eye on small town hypocrisies, but it doesn’t let her transgressive heroine off the hook. It’s a film that honours difference but recognizes the courage required to connect authentically.
