José is fired by a sugar mill owner for being a strike ringleader. Now unemployed, he moves away instead of marrying Rita (Ninón Sevilla) as originally planned… The daughter of a poor fisherman, she falls into the clutches of a succession of dodgy men, including a corrupt politician who sets her up as a dancer. When Julio Bracho (Another Dawn; Crepúsculo) failed to get financing for his script about the corrupt state of the Mexican hinterland, Rumbera icon Ninón Sevilla took on the project, worked with him on the material and brought cinematography superstar Gabriel Figueroa on board. The result is one of the greatest musical melodramas of the 1950s, boldly stylized and empassioned.
