Vancouver Premiere
Two late teen boys are in love with each other and the utopian world they live in, but tomorrow heartbreak looms as one is leaving for university. This is a musical, ’slam-poetic’ meditation on first loves and first heartbreaks, a tale of a queer interracial romance coming to an end in its current form, and the heartbreak and desperation to hold on to some of what they had together. All the dialogue has a poetic quality that we can appreciate even in the English translation. The language combines beautifully with the musical soundtrack and rings true to the naive yet sincere theatrics of the teenage experience. It’s these theatrical elements and terrific performances that keep the film unconventional and refreshing, a world where there is no prejudice shown, everyone knows they are a couple and are okay with that. The film strikes a good balance between the romantic musings and more complex social commentary that hearkens to Shakespeare and other early dramatists, complete with the chorus, asides, and ventures into pure metaphor.
