In this haunting, meditative drama, Nawapol Thamrongrattanarit explores the question of bringing a child into an uncertain world. Prapamonton Eiamchan plays Fren, a woman with a white-collar job and a baby on the way. Deeply ambivalent about her pregnancy, she conceals it from her macho husband, Thame (Paopetch Charoensook), until a twist of fate exposes the truth. Thame is delighted at the prospect of fatherhood and oblivious to Fren’s anxieties, which include misgivings about their marriage as well as worries about economic, societal, and environmental collapse.
Human Resource tells a story in which large-scale politics are refracted through small-scale human interaction. Opening with the image of an ultrasound, the film’s lens expands to encompass the discontents of the contemporary world — anxieties that exist on the periphery, but command attention the way darkening clouds or looming shadows would. This is a work that slowly, quietly asserts its power, growing more affecting with every scene.
