The Institute for the Moving Image offers year-round cohort-based Artist Programs designed to support filmmakers across disciplines and stages of practice. Each program combines intensive workshops, mentorship, peer exchange, and access to national and international industry networks.
Artist Programs
Animation
The Animation Cohort nurtures independent animators exploring distinctive visual languages and author-driven storytelling. Through online and in-person intensives, artists develop personal projects, exchange feedback with peers, and gain guidance on production, financing, and global circulation — all leading to a public presentation of five imaginative works.
Creative Business
The Creative Business Cohort empowers producers to build sustainable, ambitious careers without compromising creative vision. Participants engage in mentorship, peer collaboration, and intensive workshops on financing, IP, distribution, and global strategy — culminating in a pitch event that connects five projects with industry partners.
Documentary
For filmmakers daring to rethink non-fiction, the Documentary Cohort fosters bold vision, experimentation, and socially resonant storytelling. Over three intensives, participants develop their own projects, collaborate with peers, and receive mentorship from local and international artists — culminating in a showcase of five innovative documentaries.
Catalyst
An intimate cohort-based program designed to elevate emerging filmmakers and their projects within the dynamic context of the Film Festival. 15 dedicated participants engage in focused mentorship, peer exchange, and tailored industry sessions that strengthen creative vision, refine positioning, and expand professional networks — culminating in curated industry connections and a spotlight moment during the festival.
Composer Filmmaker Accelerator
A collaborative incubator connecting emerging composers with filmmakers through hands-on creation and mentorship. A cohort of composers participates in an intensive experience that blends artistic exploration with practical industry insight, working directly alongside filmmakers while receiving guidance from established professionals — culminating in the presentation of original compositions created for a film sequence during the festival.
