This anime hit boasts breathtaking visuals, a sophisticated ethical and philosophical drama, and an oddly structured, time-hopping narrative involving a headstrong young princess battling demons on either side of the afterlife in the company of spirit guide Gudo, who resembles a pint-sized automaton. Gudo acts a bit like the angel Clarence in It’s A Wonderful Life, guiding Yuri towards better choices in her past, lest she pay the karmic price in eternity. The film’s action scenes and intensity make it unsuitable for young children, but older anime fans should check it out for the impressive world-building, bold, ambitious storytelling and unpredictable, quirky vibe.
Striking and deeply strange… the wonder of Studio Ghibli meets the gruesomeness of Game of Thrones and the dark fury of a Greek tragedy.
