After a screening of I Didn’t See You There, Sundance U.S. Documentary Directing Award-winning filmmaker Reid Davenport takes us through the process of making his documentary. With Davenport directing, shooting and producing the documentary, his feature debut is an honest and empowering achievement in autobiographical storytelling, exploring Reid’s perspective as he moves through the San Francisco Bay Area in his wheelchair. The session will explore the intersection of accessibility and filmmaking, and the act of seeing and being seen in self-led narratives.

Reid Davenport makes documentaries about disability from an overtly political perspective. Davenport’s first feature, I Didn’t See You There, won the Directing Award for U.S. Documentary at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival. The film won the Grand Jury Prize at Full Frame Documentary Film Festival and the McBaine Bay Area Documentary Award at the San Francisco International Film Festival. Davenport was a 2017 TED fellow and gave a TED Talk about incorporating his own body into his filmmaking. His work has been featured by outlets like NPR, PBS, The Washington Post, MSNBC, and The Chronicle of Higher Education.
