Brian Chan is a composer with a focus on music for screen media. He enjoys creating across a variety of genres and crafting sounds from both traditional and newfound palettes. His primary collaborator is his brother Caleb, and together they have written music for numerous live-action and animated titles, including recent releases by Sony, Netflix and DreamWorks. Prior to being a composer, Brian was a recording engineer for the CBC where he had the pleasure of capturing some of Canada’s premiere talent and ensembles for radio. He also holds a Masters of Music in Sound Recording from the Schulich School of Music in McGill University.
Having immigrated from Hong Kong in 1997, Brian considers Vancouver home and currently lives in the city with his wife and two toddler children. He speaks mediocre Cantonese, appreciates almost any kind of noodles, and loves geeking out over charcoal BBQ.
Brian is interested in various forms of storytelling and fostering spaces for meaningful dialogue with underrepresented voices. He sees VIFF as an important cultural intersection and hub for relationship building in and around cinema.
