Best Boy

Sibling rivalry is the name of the game in Jesse Noah Klein’s pitch black comedy. Eli, Lawrence and Phillip (who’s a woman) reunite after the passing of their father and, in accordance with his last wishes, compete for the prized title of “Best Boy” (and the family inheritance) in feats of speed, strength and endurance. There are rules, but, these involve things like the losers stripping naked — which may or may not have seemed less disturbing back in their childhood. Despite their misgivings, they’re no more able to deny their father his will in death than they were when he was alive…

The demented spirit of Yorgos Lanthimos (Dogtooth; The Killing of a Sacred Deer) animates Klein’s film, which mixes intense psychological warfare with absurdism (mom wears a Viking helmet to officiate the proceedings) and shafts of dark humour.
