The Haunting is a classic exercise in the suggestive power of cinema, adpated from Shirley Jackson’s 1959 best-seller, The Haunting of Hill House, a provocative blend of supernatural and psychological horror (and a rather abrupt change of pace for West Side Story director Robert Wise). A scientist doing research on the paranormal invites two women to a haunted mansion. One of the participants (Julie Harris) soon starts losing her mind, as well she might, in an architectural construct as fiendish as this one.
