Making its world premiere at VIFF, Marinthia Gutiérrez Velazco (She Stays, MODES 2024) returns with an unapologetically nostalgic, sentimental, and unabashedly self-aware portrait of letting go and honouring one’s elders. Cartographía connects the mystical through time and roots it in a pre-destined place — an intuitive self-portrait and geographic exploration of Gutiérrez Velazco’s own astro-cartography line (which crosses her hometown of Los Angeles). With each version of herself comes a distinct relationship with the city and her art, and each version shares an unavoidable fate: the passing of her grandmother.

Marinthia Gutiérrez Velazco (she/her) is a filmmaker from Tijuana, Mexico, based in Los Angeles, California. Her debut short film, She Stays (Ella se queda), premiered at La Semaine de la Critique at Cannes in 2024. Her first feature-length screenplay, Nabor (2025), a film inspired by her maternal grandmother’s adolescence, was selected for La Residencia – FICCI and Next Step – Semaine de la Critique.
