When Terry Fox died in 1981, he left a legacy of hope that became part of Canada’s heritage. His story is familiar: after losing his leg to cancer, he set out on a cross-country odyssey to raise money with little fanfare or support, running a daily marathon for 143 days and inspiring the country before the cancer spread to his lungs, putting an end to his journey. Run Terry Run reminds us of his well-known accomplishments, but digs deeper into Terry’s character. From his reserved, taciturn beginnings, to confidently standing in the nation’s spotlight, Terry’s humility and relentless drive shine through as never before.
Following the rediscovery of unseen footage from family archives, filmmaker Sean Menard interviews Terry’s friends and family, sketching a striking, unvarnished portrait of the man behind the Marathon of Hope. Through absorbing behind-the-scenes footage, Run Terry Run explores Terry Fox’s legacy not only as a beloved hero but as a flesh-and-blood person armed with a fierce determination and an unyielding vision of a better future.
