This Month’s Film:
From acclaimed LAIKA Studios comes the Oscar-nominated adventure Kubo and the Two Strings, a breathtaking stop-motion tale set in a magical, mythic Japan. Young Kubo brings origami figures to life with the music of his magical shamisen, but when a vengeful spirit from the past returns, he must embark on an extraordinary quest with a fierce monkey (Charlize Theron) and a lovable beetle (Matthew McConaughey), battling monsters and wielding a magical sword along the way. Funny, thrilling and visually dazzling, Kubo and the Two Strings is a beautifully crafted story about family, courage, memory and the power of storytelling.
Before the film, kids and adults can have fun making their own origami friends! A special themed snack pack including themed candy, small popcorn and small drink, will be available to purchase.
Content considerations: This film deals with loss of loved ones, and features several daring sword fights with a skeleton monster, vengeful spirits, and a serpent creature, which may be scary for very young viewers. Recommended for ages 7+.
Please note: VIFF Kids Club is designed for families to attend together. Adults can only attend if they’re bringing a child, and children can only attend if accompanied by an adult.

This month's VIFF Premium member selection is a spellbinding thriller from Kiyoshi Kurosawa. Detective Kenichi Takabe (Koji Yakusho) is faced with a string of apparently unmotivated murders committed by different people, but bearing the same signature.
La Bola Negra
A big, old-school historical melodrama gets a thrillingly modern, queer makeover from Spanish duo Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi, who artfully juggle three gay protagonists across stories set in 1932, 1937, and 2017. Winner: Best Director, Cannes. Screening on 35mm.
An American Werewolf in London
Two American students get into a spot of bother with the wildlife in rural England. Then they introduce the virus to the big city... John Landis's goofy horror comedy is a very good night out. So long as it's not a full moon...
