Owen (Stephen Fung) is a playwright, actor, and director at a standstill. Lethargic, indifferent, and creatively bankrupt, he’s letting his life slip by, and his wife Tracy (Chrissie Chau) is sick of it. When his producer reminds him he’s contractually obliged to deliver a new play, Owen decides to give theatre one last shot with a work based on his own romantic and professional experience. Owen’s powerful, well-connected ex-lover Melinda (Myolie Wu) wants the lead female role. Owen, however, has a new muse in Hanna (Angela Yuen), and he’s got a plan to get his way…
Afterpiece is a wryly self-aware theatrical farce. The backstage machinations and witty dialogue might put one in mind of All About Eve, but this is an altogether different beast: a meditation on the boundary between art and the lived experience that inspires it. Literate, sophisticated, and graced with some delightful plot turns, this is a fine debut from writer-director Keane T.K. Wong.
