VIFF presents the North American premiere of Jóhann Jóhannsson’s Cinematic Suites, an unforgettable event celebrating the remarkable collaboration between late composer Jóhann Jóhannsson and visionary director Denis Villeneuve. Realized with a full orchestra, the concert brings to life the evocative musical landscapes of three Villeneuve films — Prisoners, Sicario, and Arrival — as well as selections from James Marsh’s films The Theory of Everything and The Mercy.
Witness the powerful synergy between two brilliant artists and experience how Jóhannsson’s works heighten the tension, emotion, and narrative depth of Villeneuve’s films. Compelling film clips and behind-the-scenes images complement haunting, emotive soundscapes, giving you a deeper glimpse into the creative process behind these iconic compositions.
Join us for an incredible evening that pays homage to Jóhannsson’s enduring legacy and celebrates the transformative power of music in film.

About Jóhann Jóhannsson
Icelandic composer Jóhann Jóhannsson was a hugely influential figure in contemporary composition. Disregarding any notion of barriers between genres, he created his own musical language fusing classical, minimalist, ambient, and electronic elements, with a frequent use of synths and drones. Jóhannsson was at the height of his powers in 2018 when he passed away suddenly at just 48 years of age, but his legacy lives on through his wide-ranging recorded catalogue. His works span everything from evocative pieces for small ensembles to strikingly original and award-winning film scores.
